About:

The Sustain of Memory, out November 8 on Endectomorph Music, is up-and-coming saxophonist Kevin Sun’s ambitious follow-up to his 2018 début release, Trio. Written over the course of a year, the three extended suites on this double album delve into the frontiers of jazz, new music, and modern improvised music, with the musicians improvising together through variously hallucinatory and stark musical forms.

Sun emerges as a composer and saxophonist of emotional gravity and formal sophistication here, and on display are his maturing conceptions of the trio, quartet, and quintet formats, which variously feature trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, pianist Dana Saul, bassists Simón Willson and Walter Stinson, and drummers Dayeon Seok and Matt Honor. Moving from the trancelike to the turbulent and everywhere in between, The Sustain of Memory does no less than to herald Sun’s singular perspective on modern jazz and improvised music.
