about

"...indicating the vast promise of Sun and his trio's potent understanding of jazz forebears. Theirs is a fervent, collective creativity—and it's only a beat or two from total fulfillment." — DOWNBEAT

"Sun has a warmth, richness and rhythmic vitality to his playing that at times brings Lester Young or Sonny Rollins to mind" — ALL ABOUT JAZZ, ★★★★☆

"(Un)seaworthy es un álbum pasional, valiente y abierto a nuevas emociones en cada escucha." — JAZZ, ESE RUIDO

"Making jazz safe for eggheads" — MIDWEST RECORD

(UN)SEAWORTHY is the follow up to Kevin Sun's 2018 release, TRIO.

Recorded in May 2019 after a weeklong residency in Beijing, (UN)SEAWORTHY captures the raw sound of a working band with equal amounts of confidence and jet-lagged intensity.

In just over 35 minutes, the trio performs a set of five originals that pay homage to Lester Young and Charlie Parker through a 21st century prism ("Bad Lady" and "Facsimilate [Unlike You]"), re-visit the evergreen form called rhythm changes ("Latinate"), navigate treacherous harmonic and rhythmic waters ("Seaworthy [Unseaworthy]"), and address the contemporary American condition ("Prelude / Genuflecting at the Cathedral of the Perpetual Hustle").

Kevin Sun - tenor saxophone
Walter Stinson - bass
Matt Honor - drums
